Apple Streaming Music is here! What a great announcement from Apple today. As usual, Apple has taken things a step further for themselves and their customer base. “It will change the way you experience music forever,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.
You may be saying ,”um hello! Spotify already did this!” and yes, that’s true. But you may have heard that some artists are NOT happy with what Spotify is doing. In this article from Business Insider, Taylor Swift talks about how there “should be an inherent value placed on art.” Read the whole post here.
I personally have been paying for the premium streaming service for about a year. I have used it to learn new music for my performances, to find new music and to make playlists for my students sending them songs I think they may like to sing or play.
I have loved using Spotify, but more and more artists are choosing to pull their music and it’s because they are not being paid in a fair and reasonable manner, according to the artist. That does bother me. As an artist, I am also on Spotify with my girl trio, Dangerous Curves. I just looked at our report and was surprised and happy to see some streaming action. That’s great! Not so great? It seems we are receiving about .01 to .02 a stream… whoa, not so great at all. I have to ask myself if we would even be getting heard by some of these people if it weren’t for Spotify. I have to admit, yes that’s true. We are a self-produced, indie style artist with a genre of jazz and musical theatre. I consider myself to be a pop/jazz/musical theatre girl. LOL! Tough! However, as a society we need to place value in the right places. The arts, teachers, care givers. Ah well, I see another topic for another day. 🙂
Apple Streaming Music will be available June 30 for iPhone, Mac and iPad users, and will offer the first 3 months free. Apple wants to make the service available to as many customers as possible, so it will come to Android devices and PCs down the line. A family plan will also be available.
That being said, I cancelled my subscription to Spotify and I will be trying Apple Music. It’s true I am a HUGE Apple fan and feel it’s devices and innovations and apps have improved my life and my music, however, I will happily tell you just what I think. See you June 30th!
